Born in Barmen, Ruth Kalkstein was two years old when she was admitted to the Home of the Jewish Women's Association in Neu-Isenburg. She grew up in the institution just before her 9th birthday and attended the Volksschule in Neu-Isenburg.
On September 30, 1938, Ruth was deported to Köln-Braunfels. Their last address was the Israelite Orphanage in St. Apernstraße 29-31. The children from this home were deported from the collection station Köln-Deutz to the Minsk ghetto on July 20, 1942. Among them was Ruth Kalkstein. She was 12 years old at the time of her deportation.:
