In 1937 Fred A. was born in Frankfurt am Main. His mother, Ida A., was a Polish national, but lived in Frankfurt since 1931. She was married. Fred had a seven-year-older brother.
When Fred was one-year-old, his mother gave him into custodial care at the Home of the Jewish Women's Association in Neu-Isenburg. The reason is unknown. Possibly Ida A. couldn't take care of her son any longer because of the dangers of reprisals by the Nazi regime.
Ida, Paul and Fred A. survived the Shoah. In July 1939, they were able to escape to London.
