Bertha Hirsch was born on March 23, 1906, in Idar-Oberstein. She had two sisters and a brother. Her father, Julius Hirsch, died in 1917 in the First World War, the mother, Klara Hirsch née Isak, died in 1927. After the death of the mother, the 21-year old Bertha lived in the Home of the Jewish Women’s Association in Neu-Isenburg for ten years. She worked as a housemaid.

On January 27, 1937, Bertha Hirsch was compulsorily sterilized at the Stadtkrankenhaus Offenbach for alleged innate swine flu. The decision was based on the Heritage Health Court Offenbach on October 15, 1936, based on a medical report of the State Health Department Offenbach as well as comments from the Police Office of Neu-Isenburg and the Mayor of Idar-Oberstein. The family doctor of “Heim Isenburg” and the head of the home, Helene Krämer, had objected to the official diagnostic and opposed the intervention.

Where Bertha was staying afterward, is not known. Her last address was: Darmstadt, Alicestraße 20. On March 25, 1942, Bertha was deported from Darmstadt to the Piaski ghetto in the area of Lublin. From there, she was probably kidnapped and murdered in the same year in the Sobibór extermination camp.
