Walter Ullmann is the son of Rosa Ullmann, who is also listed in this memorial book. He was born on 19 January 1921 at the Israelite Hospital in Frankfurt/Main. From February 1 to May 31, 1921, he lived with his mother in the home of the Jewish Women's Association in Neu-Isenburg. Afterwards Rosa Ullmann left the institution and moved to Frankfurt/Main. Walter was transferred to the children's home of the association "Weibliche Fürsorge" in the Hans-Thoma-Straße 24 (at that time still named Forsthausstraße) on July 25, 1921. He lived there for almost six years. On May 6, 1927 Walter Ullman was signed off to Diez/Lahn, where he was housed in the Israelite Children's Home. He completed three elementary school years in Diez. In 1932 he moved to the public Reform-Realgymnasium, but had to leave this school under pressure from racist-minded teachers in 1934 and to return to elementary school. In 1935, the 14-year-old boy moved to Frankfurt to live again with his mother. At the end of March 1938, Rosa Ullman, now married and named Glücksmann, emigrated to New York, where her husband already lived since some months. Rosa Glücksmann brought her son to the USA a few months later. Walter Ullmann travelled from Hamburg to New York on November 3, 1938.
